Facebook and Job Hunting

I’m curious to hear your thoughts on whether employers should be able to peek at your Facebook page to help them decide whether to hire you. Apparently, Germany is moving against this policy. Should the U.S. do the same, or should job hunters be smarter about what they put on Facebook? (Or, should Facebook make clearer their privacy policy?)

  1. If we accept that it is unethical for employers to pass judgment on an employee based on religion or race, then the same should be said for judgment based on personal life. Some might say Facebook has provided a portal employees can peek in and gauge information about the efficiency of the people they'll be paying and relying on. But the professional world has been fine without such a portal for a long time. Especially because Facebook reveals such arbitrary things as the way somebody parties, or communicates with friends, or poses for photos...Factors that are likely irrelevant to a one's drive and professional competence. Besides, even great achievers have had louche personal lives.
When we use Facebook as a rig for facile judgments, Facebook becomes a tool for oppression. And that's the last thing the Internet should be.
